2003 6.0 3/4 king ranch 4x4 cc with 163,000 miles. Had egr delete in march, FICM due to no start about 7 weeks ago, since then the truck will not stay running. It has been in two different shops for 7 weeks. It will start right up but cut out while driving and die when stopping. No one knows what to do... Can you give me any ideas that I can pass along to shop? I'm no mechanic but I can ask the shop owner some questions. Thanks
I would start off by getting yourself some gauges that read live data, like scan gauge II or one of the smart phone apps like dashboss for IOS devices or torque pro for android, they are an absolute necessity in diagnosing these trucks. You need to have the codes read to see if you have any DTC's present, you can have pending codes without a check engine light. And it will be helpful if you can share with us what the 2 shops have done in an attempt to correct the problem.
They have replaced FICM a couple times, cam shaft positioning sensor, PCM and a couple more sensors. They haven't left any of the sensors or PCM on because it did not fix the problem. I know my question is vague, but its just a mystery to everyone it seems and at this point I have no idea what all has been tried.
Im guessing it is going to be HPO system related, whether or not it is a leak or the ICP sensor or pigtail have gone bad or possible failing HPOP. Probably the most common will be the ICP sensor, pull the ICP sensor plug and check the plug end for evidence of oil, if there is oil in the electrical connection you need to replace the sensor and pigtail. But this will become just a parts throwing party (and a mighty expensive one at that) without gauges to point the way.
The 03 engines are partiularly prone to the engine wiring harness chafing on the intake manifold bolts near the FICM. If the stalling concern started after the FICM was replaced, then that is where I would be looking.
Often a stall can be duplicated by pushing/moving the wiring harness while the engine is running. If the engine stalls or hiccups, then you locate and repair the short.
I'm in Texarkana. I will try to get what all they've done too it. I have not had it at the dealership... Trying real hard to avoid! They have told me that's it not a wiring problem because they've checked all wiring. Their saying possible HPOP but not sure because it starts right up immediately after it dies. Starts great just runs bad and dies frequently.
you might have a broken wire inside the harness, start the truck up and prod the harness right where it passes between the fuel and oil filter see if it dies. Mine had a problem there.
