With an installed generator, you can flash the field, or better, unhook the belt and hook the battery (neg lead in this case) to the Armature connection...sometimes you have to give the generator a little spin to get it going.
Going back a few years.. If I remember correctly....as Ray said. The generator will run as a motor at a "high speed" then if you ground the F (field) the generator speed will slow down.
