Bench Check 6-V Generator

I recently bought a spare generator for my 223 I-6 and would like to bench test it. What is the best way to do this? Many thanks. Steve

I hook them to a battery and if they motor than they will also charge.

Your the first one I have heard use that method in over 40 years. Thats the very same thing I used to do and have done so all along.

Which posts and order do you use to connect to a battery to make it spin? Assuming a positive ground system.

Hook the negative to the armature post and positive to ground last. If I remember right, either way will work.

Motorizing a generator is also a good way to re-apply some magnetism to the iron core field magnets. When a generator sits around unhooked, the magnets can get too weak to start generating.

With an installed generator, you can flash the field, or better, unhook the belt and hook the battery (neg lead in this case) to the Armature connection...sometimes you have to give the generator a little spin to get it going.

Going back a few years.. If I remember correctly....as Ray said. The generator will run as a motor at a "high speed" then if you ground the F (field) the generator speed will slow down.

Thanks for the feedback. A local shop offered a free bench test so I took and had it checked; it works! Now I have a good spare.
