My buddy's L99 was having ac problems. His clutch wasnt engaging without "tapping" on it. I pulled the center bolt off to do the shim trick, but i did not find any shims behind the clutch. What i did find using a small screwdriver, sticking it inside the compressor to clean some gunk out from around the splined shaft was a bunch of material that looked like fine steel wool. I was able to clean most of it out, i thought maybe whatever that stuff was was acting as a shim, but after reassembly, the clutch still will not ingage on its own.
Are the shims behind the boss area on the clutch that slides over the splined shaft? Maybe someone else had done the shim trick before and already removed all the shims? There was probably .125" gap between the clutch and compressor.
The shims are about the size of small-diameter 1/4-inch washers. Something around 1/4"ID, 7/16"OD. There is usually only one.
They are commonly found either sticking to the end of the compressor shaft, or down inside the end of the splined area of the plate, where the bolt comes through.
They usually hang somewhere because of accumulated grease and grime.
If they are down inside of the splined area, a small hook of some kind may be needed to retrieve them out.
It is possible, however, that yours is already gone from a previous service. If that's the case, just buy a new clutch assembly. They're about a hundred dollars, and be sure to get a shim kit, too, to enable you to properly set the new air gap.
