OK, when I bought my truck the guy told me the AC compressor was locked up. Well the more I thought about it I decided to look into it more before I spent $450 in parts just to have a warranty. Anyway, pulled the front plate off the clutch since I couldn't get it to turn at all. Metal shaving galore, looks like the bearings in the outer part decided to turn to confetti. My question, since I can't find it in my Chilton, how do I get the clutch off? I figure theres an easy way compared to what I thought at first like a puller or something.
Also I was curious if my thought of the clutch being locked up would be the actual problem verses the compressor being locked up and causing the clutch to go out.
My guess, it's a crap shoot and I need to get the one off to find out about the other. Am I anywhere close to being in the ballpark? lol
I'm thinking the clutch went out because the compressor locked up. I think you need a puller to get the clutch off. DO a search for clutch removal on FS6 compressor
To remove the clutch, take the bolt out of the front that screws into the compressor shaft. There are usually threads in the center of the clutch that you thread a bolt into, the bolt will press against the compressor shaft and pop the center of the clutch off the shaft. The you can get to the snap ring that holds the electro magnet on the compressor. The magnet is pressed on the compressor. If you have shavings in the clutch it is shot. A lot of times you can get the whole assembley cheaper than you can get the indivual parts.
