Howdy-been awhile...time for another brain pick?
My '68 F100 390 manual 3 speed (now on floor-Hurst) without power steering is missing something in the connection: the steering wheel can be pulled about 1" to 1 & 1/2" forward or backward, the gap being visible at wheel/shaft connection, and where the pins fit-or slide free of rag joint hookup. Suspension has been raised, and I've been assured all is well at kingpins, links, tierods, arms, the works. I put on a new, rebuilt steering box, manual, correct arm, and a new rag joint. VERY stiff steering, and we spotted the looseness back/forth from column. Where to look-what to do?? Before I tear out what's left of my 67-yr-old shoulders? Maybe I can explore and repair the turnsignals at same time...no shop manual...visual aids?
Thanking in advance, I remain....a novice.

Thanks for the exploded view, Bill. I'm wondering: if I remove the wheel, since it's at that point where it can work its way toward me...or be pulled back & forth by 1 1/2 inch, thereby disconnecting the pin lineup with the rag joint...should I be looking for a nut, screw or some other kind of attachment that would hold the column in place, not allowing the pins to lift out of their "home"? The old joint actually became bent, distorted to the point of ripping...not wanting that with this joint. Thanks again.
I know this is over a month old but I think I may have an answer for you. There's a small clamp clamped to the lower end of the steering shaft (3524 in Bills picture) that pushes up against the lower bearing (3517 lower Bills pic) in the tube (3514 in Bills pic) That clamp (unclear which number in Bills pic) should keep the steering wheel and shaft from coming toward the driver when pulled on.
Let us know what you found.
Lower bearing is part #3517 so what is the plastic piece that goes inside? I need both and cant make it out. People at Ford are no help as they can't look anything up older than 1980. Before I shorten my column I need to replace these parts. Thanks
Lower bearing is basic part #3517 so what is the nylon piece that goes inside?(#3518)

Thanks, I did actually find a parts man that knew the numbers in his head. I had to go to two different dealerships to pick up the parts but they are in hand.
