I have a 1968 F100 Ranger 2wd. I'm pretty sure I need a whole steering column. When you grab my steering wheel and push and pull back and forth, the shaft moves in and out of the steering gear box. Also, there is a huge gap between the steering wheel and the end of the column and I'm not sure if that's supposed to be like that. One more thing, down near the steering box are those rubber plates between the two couplings. There's a plate there that's not even bolted to the other plate on the opposite side of the rubber. There's just 2 small bolt/shafts that lodge between 2 openings on the opposite side of the coupler...it's kind of hard for me to describe, I'll try to upload a video.
Anyway, I'm wondering if I should just go to my local salvage and get a whole column instead of messing with parts on mine?
The steering columns are rebuildable. Did not say if you have manual transmission on the column or auto. I am rebuilding one now.
That, possibly worn-out rag joint/coupler connecting your steering column to the steering box could be lots of your play. Replace that rubber coupling and see what happens. Lots of threads concerning it.
While you are at it and the part number for a 1969 F100 steering coupler?

No other Ford dealer, no obsolete parts vendor has any. It's available from Dorman Products sold by auto parts stores.
The gap between the wheel and the column is usually a sign the the front cab mounts have failed. Either the rubber mount or the actual steel cab mount has rotted. I would suggest taking pictures of the rag joint, Cab Mounts and steering column and post them.

Got a steering wheel column today at my local salvage for $25.00. My son got a bench seat that was in fair shape for his 1966 F100 for $20.00. I took a video of my steering column problem.
