86 F150 5.0 4x4 auto...I recently had the front brakes lock up and catch on fire. Replaced rotors, calipers, pads and brake lines on the front. The calipers were stuck, couldnt budge them with a c clamp. Took off for a test drive last night and it stopped like a brand new one. I dont believe I had any front brakes before this at all. After about 5 miles they started locking up and smoking again. Now im at a loss as what to do next.
When it locks up again, go out under the hood and crack the hard line going to the master cylinder till some fluid leaks out, and see if they release(make sure you get the right line, most of the time they are backwards). If they do release, the most common problem is a mis-adjusted rod coming out of the brake booster. If it's a little bit too long, it will not apply the brakes, but it will cover up the compensation ports in the master cylinder, and then the brake fluid can't expand back into the master reservoir.
I have seen one other thing cause this, it's how I got my 86 ranger for free. Everything had been replaced and the last guy who had it replaced the master cylinder. The brakes still locked up. When I got it, I messed with it for awhile, and found the shaft going from the pedal to the brake booster was rusty and sticking, not letting the pedal come back up ever so slightly. No amount of wd40 would unstick it, so I ended up getting a new booster, problem solved and now I drive it to work everyday since it gets such good fuel mileage.
