I just bought a 2008 f350 4wd with a 5.4
Check engine light is on. abs light also comes on sometimes. Since I plan on keeping this truck for awhile I have decided to buy a code scanner.
Any opinions on which one to buy? Do they read the abs codes as well?
I am very happy with my Scangauge. I bought it online from Autozone but think a better deal could have been found.
It was bought for a 1996 Mustang GT that had a recurring check engine light. Found and corrected the problem, reset the computer and all was well. Used it to check a few other autos, very very easy. Hooked it to me 2006 SD with 6.0 to monitor temps, etc, but then found a SCT 9600 for a good price already loaded with the tunes I needed.
It really depends on how deep in you want to go.
The Scanguage will only read so much and it not
the best on reading codes.
The AE with the Ford bundle or if you have the money
a Snap-on.
Here is the link. AutoEnginuity
I don;t use one because I have a Snap-on Solus
but it will read things that the SGII (Scanguage II) won't and
also things that the "FREE" scans at the auto parts store
won't report to you also.
The SGII is a good programable gauge set but it has limits and
that is the problem with the cheeper scan tools.
The very basic models provide only error codes (if that is enough for you ). One step up models will provide "live data" which could be helpful for some diagnostic work . One more step up may provide some "charts" that can be useful for advanced diagnostic work. Another step up can provide ABS brake codes . More advanced models will give you transmission error codes ,etc.
You have to decide how far you want to go and select a model accordingly.
