1974 f250 not getting fuel

Sorry if this is already a thread, I looked and couldn't find it.

Hello all! I have a question that I hope someone can help me with.

I have a '74 f250 4x4 with a 460, and im not getting gasoline from the gas tanks. I have tried with a fuel line going straight into a gas can, and it will draw from that, but not the tanks for some reason. I have about 9 gallons in the tank. (main-rear) tank.

I thought maybe the selector valve was bad, so I connected the pump straight to the rear tank line and still nothing. I also tried blowing air with a compressor into the line to see if it would go through to the feed neck and it flowed. the line is old and ugly but seems fine. any suggestions?

If there is gas in the tank and the fuel lines are not clogged and the fuel pump is working then I would go back to the tank and pull the assembly that the gas line ties into on the tank. There should be a long tube that reaches out to the bottom of the tank. Make sure that is not clogged. Make sure it is there.
If you don't want to pull out the assembly you can attach a short piece of fuel line and try to suck gas up it.

Another thing, check the condition of all of the soft lines in the system. Over time the rubber hoses get hard and can crack allowing air to leak and lose suction.
The lines are clear but the pump can't pull fuel from the tank because of the air leaks.

On the end of the fuel sending units pickup tube (except in-cab tank), is a plastic meshed filter screen.

Gets clogged up with rust and scale, so no fuel will pass thru tube.

D1AZ-9A011-A .. Filter Screen 3/8" I.D. / Available from Ford/autoparts stores.

1971/79 all FoMoCo vehicles except Maverick/Comet/Pinto/Bobcat (these cars use a 5/16" I.D. screen).
