Fuel System Issue

Ok, I have kind of a long story but I need some help. I bought a 1986 F150 not long ago and it is a 4.9 liter 4x4. I recently swapped the motor with a 4.9 out of an 84 F150 and got everything running good. It idles a little rough, but anyway I was driving ot yesterday and it cut of all f a sudden and would not crank, I checked the fire and fuel and figured out it was not getting fuel which I decided may be the fuel pump ( which is mechanical) and I replaced it but that didnt fix it. So I dropped the tank this morning and the in tank filter and pickup line seemed to be fine. So I dropped the fuel line directly into the tank and it started to pump and fired right up. So do you guys have any ideas on what the fix would be for my problem or any things that I need to check?

Thanks for any help!

Make sure the emission line from the tank is not blocked, so the tank cannot get air. I believe the gas cap lets air in too. Also make sure the fuel line is nowhere near the exhaust.

Check the lines (especially rubber) from the tank to the pump for cracks, holes or loose connections. Air entering the suction line can stop the flow.

Well, I did check the line and I think it is fine because when I disconnect the line at the fuel tank and drop it in a gas can then the truck will fire. But I did drop the tank yesterday and it had roughly a quarter of a tank but the filter that is on the end of the pickup in the tank was not even submerged in fuel. I also checked the gauge, and it was reading right. So this leads me to believe that there should be plenty enough fuel for the truck to run. But do any of you guys have this problem or have any ideas on how to lengthen the pickup so that it will burn all the fuel and not just some of it and run out?<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

Thanks For The Help!<o></o>

You could get a short piece of steel line at the parts store, and also get a compression fitting to splice the metal line onto the pickup tube. I am assuming the pickup tube is a standard size tubing, but I am not sure about that.

You should not have to do all this though. I wonder if someone put the wrong sending unit/pickup assembly in it.

I wondered if maybe it had been changed and someone put the wrong one in it. I rigged up something almost exactly like you described and it worked. So now that thats solved I have an oil leak from the drivers side of the motor andthat whole side is wet even up toward the top of the transmision so have you guys seen this before. I am begining to wonder if the head gasket is leaking but I guess I will see.

Thanks for any help!
