rebuild it or...

trucks been backfiring alot and pretty weak middle of the gears, figured id take it to a guy see if the carb needed tuning or if i should get a new exhaust
( bought it with some random exhaust off a bus, headers then this thing, i believe its a 2.5-3' pipe and a rather big cat)

guys calls my dad about lunch.
says i need to rebuild my carb.

ive been looking at the cliff intake, headers, and a new carb( kinda liking the dual 32/36 since i dont think a single 32\36 would be enough, whats the stock carb rated at?
read online cliff is not all its made out to be

should i go ahead with all the swapping, getting a wiring harness and swapping the ecu with a non feedback carb truck, getting a carb tuning it, exhaust, heat plate?

should i simply rebuild it? a kit is like 30$, would that mess with the electronics?

get a reman carb?

mind you in roughly a month ill be making a 4hr drive to sc and living there for the next few years, so i wont have all my connections readily availabe as before

thanks for any advice

"...should i..." Not really a subjective matter of what you "should" do but a matter of your choosing from the options you listed. Your exhaust has little to do if anything about the backfire and weak power...unless the Cat is plugged or there is some other impediment in the exhaust system.

There are other options for intakes other than the Clifford. Do some searching on the site here for writeups (as there are plenty) of people using the Offenhauser intakes, and exhaust manifolds from an EFI truck for the exhaust. It's what I have on mine, and it's a potent combo.
Edelbrock 500s and Holley 390s & 600s are commonly used for 4bbl carbs. The 300 is a big motor and can take way more than the stock little 1bbl put out (which is believed to be rated somewhere in the ballpark of 190 - 220cfm.)

What year is your truck? If you have an '84 - '86, you may have other issues to contend with.

As for rebuilding the carb, that's your call. You may just want to try a $30 rebuild kit. That simply refreshes the gaskets and rubber internals that wear out over time, causing leaks and drivability issues. It may be as simple as that.

It is an 85, so what other issues are you talking about?

The guy I had check it out said it was leaking and needed rebuild it back fires pretty bad but then again it has a 3" cat off a bus and that's my exhaust system after the headers

I knew about the iffy intake just hasn't looked into it much yet, eventually I will put headers and all that, but I don't really want to do all of that just yet, I'll have to spend the money and time getting it all together and a rebuild and an actual exhaust system should take care of it for now.

All of the smog and emissions and egr and all of that crap, still functions perfectly, well I think lol

With '84 - '86, there can often be issues with the computer controlled carb setup due to age. But, it's also usually because, more often than not, some of the components are removed, which causes it to run very poorly. However, if all your stuff's intact, you might not have anything to worry about.

If it were me, I'd just go ahead and rebuild the original carb. At least it'll be nice and driveable while you're working on your upgrades. A carb rebuild is less than a tank of gas.
