Can I disable the ABS function on my 2003 F-350? Recently had a situation where I had to stand on the brakes. If it weren't for a clear wide left shoulder I would have rolled over a Civic. When I stood on the brake I had no chatter or pulsing. It took FOREVER for the truck to come to a stop. During normal everyday driving the brakes are fine. I have new brakes front & rear.(less than 3000 miles) I wanna be able to hear tires squeel when I stand on the pedal. Is there any way to disable the ABS system with out affecting any other components of the truck? Thanks...Ro
There is, but if you didn't feel the ABS system coming on, it was NOT THE ABS SYSTEM causing the braking issues.
Or to be more precise, disabling the ABS system wouldn't help.
You might have a dirty/stuck valve in the ABS valve unit that dumps pressure to an "accumulator" even when the system is not activating.
You can pull the connector from the master cylinder float switch, which will disable the ABS, or pull the ABS fuse itself. But if it wasn't pulsing when this happened, that won't change things.
You have to figure out what is causing this. Try the same maneuver in a parking lot or somewhere else you can do a brake test and see what happens.
Also, try this on dirt and MAKE the ABS system activate. That might clear out any dirt or unstick a valve in the ABS unit. If so, it's time to bleed system with a scan tool that can activate the ABS system.
Disableing the ABS is not the right answer. If you are having troubles stopping take the truck in and have a qualified tech look at it. If you do disable it and then get into a collision there is also a liability issue to worry about.
Wasn't driving like a maniac. Guy crossed over 2 lanes of traffic to make a turn with no warning or signal. I was 1 of 3 people looking for a place to stop. I'm 58 years old and haven't been in an accident in 20 years.
Anyway this is not mine, but a friend who is oversseas. 01 f250 7.3 auto 4x4 and when you hit the brakes, it feels and sounds like the road turned into a rumble strip. Drives and stops fine.
I was thinking about disabling the ABS to see if it is by chance ABS related.
Interesting thing I did see. I jacked the rear end up and put it on stands. I wanted to see if i could feel it in the rear, or not. So i accell, and when I touch the brakes, it stalls the truck??? A 7.3 stalling just from stopping the rear wheels no load,,, wierd to me..
Well, let my friend in front end shop look at it. He was certain that it was warped rotors, on front, even though one was brand new, so I agreed to take both new one to be turned and put on. He says that fixed it,, will see tommorrow.
i think regardless of how it is tommorrow I am going to clean master cylinder, and replace the fluid, and do a real real good bleed/flush. i think there is a vac bleeder at teh shop. Do you really need to hook it up to a scanner to bleed? i see that answer given,, but the service manual does not mention it,,, all it talks about is good old fasion bleeding into a jar.
You need a scanner/diag-tool to bleed the ABS unit, otherwise you can do a good old-fashioned bleed, just without getting rid of the old stuff in the ABS unit itself.
Just be careful not to get any air into the ABS unit, and you'll be fine.
Then, take it to a dirt lot and get the ABS unit to kick on a few times, and then rebleed if you want to really make sure you get as much of the old stuff out as possible.
A good way to turn off the ABS quickly is just disconnect the float switch on the master cylinder. If the fluid is low, the ABS unit turns off.
thanks i will try that. I turned two new front rotors, and installed, and it is 99.9%gone. I think something is causing it though. I can still feel the brakes surging in the pedal. I figure the warping will return. But i have two decent rotors that can be turned ad ready, and i will tell them if it comes back we need to install front calipers next i think.
I pumped all the fluid out through right rear. It was dark dark green. I used two full bottles of fluid and it is still pretty dirty looking. And green. I use soda bottles and tubing to bleed by myself. After using the last of the second bottle, I went around and did ten pumps from each of remaining three wheels.
I am heading to town to get three more bottles, and some oil to finish the oil change, then it is off to the pasture for some abs testing.
I will try your idea, i wil just top it off for now, and drive the fire out of t, and bleed again. Useing up half the fluid, drive again, then use remaining.
