I have a 78' F250 that came with a 400. I already have the engine disassembled and am looking for advice for a mild to moderate modification rebuild.
Machining
Haven't determined the taper or whether the block needs to be bored or not, but it's my understanding the 400's came stock at a 8.5:1 ratio. I'd like to see it get to 9:1 at the very least (understanding this may be a conversation with my machinist). Anyways, what material of piston and piston rings do any of you recommend or have had good luck with?
Im also looking to upgrade the camshaft, any recommendations there as well?
However, in terms of engine rebuilding, I have heard it's just best to get a engine rebuild kit so it's easy to keep track of gaskets, etc. I guess my ultimate question is what type of engine rebuild kit that is a solid buy that encompasses all of these possible modification (or really one that I can have faith putting into my Ford). I'm pretty new to rebuilding so I am a little ignorant on good dependable brands etc.
I've got a dead stock 400 that runs pretty well for what it is. I think 8.5 compression stock is optimistic! I under most are lower. When rebuild time comes, I'll probably talk to Tim Meyer. He specializes in these engines and has a piston that will get compression in the low 9's with otherwise stock parts. On the rest of your plans, if the engine is out and disassembled I'd go ahead and have it bored to get correct fit with the new pistons.
