c6 torque converter frustration
I don't know if this problem is unique or not. I'm trying to install the torque converter to a C6. It's the one that came off it. I just can't get it back on. I've checked for burrs and it's all clean. I can put it on and turn and jiggle it a little and it thunks and slides back on the shaft some. But that isn't far enough. I can't get the converter in the pump in the transmission. I've turned and jiggled and pushed till my hands are sore. I'm at a loss. I have noticed that looking in the transmission with a flashlight I can see the flats that line with the flats on the converter. They move. The pump is turning as I'm trying to line up the flats. Is this normal and is there a way to make em hold still. I've spent the entire morning on this and I'm frustrated to say the least. Thanks and have a great day.

I have seen this many times on different mixers . Last resort ... get a buddy or two and stand the mixer on it's tail shaft . Then install the convertor . ( WATCH YOUR FINGERS !) They can be trickey to install . I usually push , jiggle and rotate the torque convertor both ways to get them to seat .

That's usually the problem, especially on C4's, a thrust washer in the tail section gets out of line and the shaft won't go all the way in. It feels like the shaft is bottoming in the t.c., and it is, but the shaft isn't all the way into the trans. Standing them up on end prevents the washer from sliding to the side.

Thanks for the quick response. I've checked the shaft length and measured it and all that seems to be in order. I don' think it's bottoming out. If I measured correctly the spines on the shaft are about half way engaged with the converter splines just as the converter is beginning to engage in the pump. Sounds about right to me. With full pump engagement the splines would be fully engaged. It's a puzzle to me. The flats on the pump and converter just won't line up or it's just not going in for some other reason.

Wheww. It finally succumbed to my insistent efforts. What I wound up doing was, with a lift, lifting it and standing it on the tailshaft until vertical. Upon lowering the converter down on the input shaft it only took maybe 1 minute and it slid on so effortlessly. So now the transmission is mated to the engine and i can begin fitment into the truck. Thanks everyone for your replies and help. This forum is so valuable to us who are not as educated in "old truckness" as a lot of folks here seem to be. Have a great day.
