The way I do it is to stand the trans on end, bellhousing up. Spin the torque converter until it goes down four times. Reinstall the trans making sure the converter doesn't slip forward again.
Year sounds you didn't properly line up the drive ears and notches on the converter and the input shaft. You can spend weeks(I did) trying to get it mate, but unless you line up the drive notches, you are stuck.
I like the idea of lining up while standing on it's tail but sounds heavy.
The way I did this years ago was to look down the input shaft with a strong light and make sure the drive ear sleeve is centered around the shaft and note where the ears are. Then slide the TC onto the shaft with the drive notch about lined up with the ears and gently turn it a bit each way til it seats. It should seat very easily with NO Force. I have not done this on a Ford so I don't know about the 4 times of sliding onto the shaft, maybe multiple engagements?
