Is it time to look for another vehicle????
My old boss at the garage said I own the engine that blows up from a smaller than average oil passage hole in the heads, and starves the camshaft from oil. Then it blows up!! guess ford knew it was an issue and won't do anything about it. It's a 2004 f-150 super crew cab 4x4 with a 5,4 triton engine. He said I have been lucky so far it has 132,000 miles and is just know starting to do this, but not every time I start it up.
Your old boss doesn't know what he is talking about. You prob have a bad tensioner seal that is bleeding off some oil pressure. Also cheap aftermarket oil filters can leak oil back into the pan when the engine is off so it has to fill back up with oil before you get any oil pressure. The glue in the cheap filters can break apart too and get lodged in the oil passages. As far as smaller oil passage, Ford designed the oil system to deliver the right amount of oil where it is needed as long as the engine is maintained. A sludged engine can have restricted passages and blow up but that's not a design flaw.
Thanks he was getting his info from another source. he was misinformed then. But I now own the specialty tool for removing broken spark plugs and have rented it out on several occasion to others for that spark plug breaking issue with great success. As for the oil filter I have use only Motorcraft filters and change my oil every 3000 miles with synthetic oil. I will look into the tensioner issue. Thank you for your input. I love this truck and want to drive it for many more years.
The timing cover has to come off to do the tensioners, whenever I do one I sell new phasers, guides, and the updated VCT solenoids. When I'm finished the engine runs like new and is very quiet. If you are gonna do something, do it right I always say.

My 04 with 180k has had the occasional rattle/knock at startup since new. I figure it is somewhat normal. 5w20 synthetic and 820s filters every 5k here. Engine runs smooth, just noisy with that startup racket and the phaser noise at warm idle.
