I hope I am in the right section, Anyways I just bought a f150 single cab 06 model 4.6 v8 motor. The issue I have is when I am coming to a red light or stop sign I have even pressure on the peddle and as I am stopping I get the sensation kinda like I am tapping the brakes lightly, truck slowing then kinda like I release the brake and normal braking, and when this is happening I have steady pressure on the brake peddle. whoever had the truck before had replaced brakes, all around truck, looked at rotors everything seems fine, not warped just looking at them, but issue is when I brake I feel the truck slowing like I am kinda tapping them when I am not, any help would be appreciated,
You can't see rotor warpage just by looking at them. You need to put a dial indicator on them and check. Anything more than a few thousandths of an inch is too much. You could also have a problem with uneven pad transfer which is often seen on the cheaper, poorly machined rotors that are on the market these days.
If you just want to shotgun it, machine all four rotors and deglaze the pads. Make sure all of the caliper slides are cleaned and well lubricated with silicone grease and that none of the pads stick in the caliper brackets. Avoid getting the brakes too hot during the next few dozen miles, then you should be good to go.
Hah bad reply. I did that one half asleep. Yeah you can have a warped rotor feeling at 0.002 inch and up. I fully support your diagnoses fire me. On these truck it can be worth spending the money to have them turned. You can determine warped rotors by using a dial caliper/ or a digital dialcaliper as well. Good luck let us know about your findings
Thanks for the replies. Truck has disk brakes all around. Going to have rotors turned this coming weekend. How can I do the deglazing of brake pads after I get rotors turned?
Use a flat file, or sand paper, other wise a angle grinder with a sand paper head, maybe even a belt sander would work. Haven't tried that one. Depends on how worn the front brakes are maybe decide on putting on new pads. Braking is 70% front and 30% rear. Its all up to you. Don't forget after turning them not to brake excessively the first few miles . That can lead to some warping because of thinner rotors. Sounds like you got it about covered! Good luck
