Hi everyone I have a '87 F-250 5.8L 351 Windsor H.O. My oil filter is really old and seized in place. I tried using a collapsing wrench for removing oil filters, which crushed it. Than I tried pounding a screw driver through the oil filter to gain leverage and torque. Upon turning the screw driver more of the filter just broke away. The base plate is still seized at the threads. Does anyone know of a way I can get this sucker off of there?
Can you weld a piece of scrap metal to it for leverage?
If not I'd say just go to Home Depot and get a big *** pair of channel locks and use that on the base plate. You can always return them if you don't have a need for them afterwards.
I can't weld it or heat it up at all. I like the idea of the channel locks. I was thinking of using a chisel to break away the rest of the filter and try to grab the base plate and spin it with either pipe wrench or channel locks. I wanted to see if maybe there was any other ways I hadn't thought of first before I got all mad scientist on it. Thank u for your help man. I appreciate it.
I agree with just tearing the can off and trying to get a grip on the base plate somehow. If you have a local Harbor Freight you can get really big tools you only need to use a few times for real cheap. Some of their tools are better than others, but if you will only be using it a few times it's the deal of the century.
Thanx very much guys. My solution was I ended up tearing several holes in the outside housing. It was pretty thick metal and i got a 3 sided oil removing wrench wedged in 3 holes. I snapped the oil wrench but I was able to break loose and replace the old oil filter. What a crazy job. I have never seen one that bad before... until now. Thanx again so much everybody for your help and ideas.
