I just got in from changing the oil in my F350. I am having trouble of late getting my oil filter off. Am I only supposed to hand tighten the filter or use the wrench? I have been in the habit of tightening with the wrench, but this time I only moved it a little. I'm getting tired of wearing myself out trying to get it off. I just hope I don't get a drip now.
Mine always drips a little if I don't snug it up with a wrench first. Just get a bigger filter wrench if you're worried about it not coming off. I bought one from Napa after Dan showed his to us.
My regular heavy duty filter wrench is on the left. The NAPA one that takes a 1/2" extension and ratchet is on the right. In lieu of a ratchet you could use a breaker bar and 6' cheater if need be, but I haven't seen a filter that stubborn yet.
Thats what I do to 1/4 turn after hand tight make sure you lube up the top gasket to.
That's about what I did this time. I guess I have always hand tightened as much as I could then went about 3/4 turn after that. I think that's what I've always done with my gasburners. I do have a very weak AutoZone wrench that only has a 10" handle with a adjustable rubber band. I need to get the NAPA wrench if I continue to change my oil.
I spin mine on until it touches the block, then I turn by hand one full turn. Never had a problem with leaks or taking it off (also by hand). I don't even own a filter wrench. LOL

You can't get a better description than this picture.
I use a 1/2 drive breaker bar on mine to loosen it up.
It makes the job single handed in ease of removal.
It is wide enough to spread the load out around the filter so that is simply doesn't slip or crush the filter, even the most stubborn ones.
Here it is at Napa online.
