the FMS shorty headers did make a seat of the pants difference on my 5.0. The milage didn't go up any, but that could be partly due to my new found heavier right foot.
I too am looking for a lift in milage and horse power.
I've had my truck for 9 months and recently learned that it
likes the expensive gas @91-92 octane otherwise pings.
I put headers into my V-10 E-350 and I got a noticable improvement in low-end "uumph" and leaving a stop with a heavy trailer. It feels like it breathes a lot better. It runs 2 degrees cooler than it did also but I did not notice more than about 1.5 mpg improvement and that could be because I have the van loaded to the max at all times and generally drive like Steve Mc Queen. I'm sure I lost about 35 pounds when I took the stock manifolds off though.
I would recommend headers.

My truck had the same problem when I first bought it. I ran some B12 through the tanks, and turned the timing down a tad. Hasn't had a problem running on cat **** ever since, even hauling a trailer.
