Looks like I am headed for my first excursion under the valve covers. Had a #6 glow plug code the other day, cleared it but it looks like it is back. I don't have the time to deal with it right away and have a road trip at the end of the month. These are these original glow plugs on ~ 165K. I have read about after market units swelling and being a super pain to remove. Is this an issue with Motorcraft and how long can I go before replacing them if need be? Have not tested anything yet so not sure if it is harness or plug issue. Hot weather now so no starting issue.
Test the continuity on the GPs first, so you have a reference point. The UVCH causes everybody grief sooner or later, so get a new set of these (OEM from Clay). The glow plugs themselves are about 10 bucks each at Clay's diesel demonizing and dialing emporium. The GPs don't wrench out... they just loosen with a 10mm deep-socket. You have to get a tube of the correct diameter to spin them out, once loosened. I have a piece of semi-rigid 5/16" fuel line to do this.
Thanks for the replies and especially the vid. I live in NE CAL, ~100* right now but do need them 4-5 months in the winter. Don't drive it much in winter though, the back end gets sideways too easy in the ice/snow.
