injector cups again?

I replaced all my injector cups 2 months ago. I had fuel in the coolant. When I pulled the old cups I couldn't find any obvious cracks in any of them. All seemed fined for 2 months. I just pulled my 5er to Colorado from Oklahoma, and what do find when I get there, fuel in the coolant again. It is not as bad as 2 months ago, I am assuming I have a cup that didn't seal properly? But everything was fine for 2 months. Could putting a heavy load in mountains made a difference? I am on the way home, when I get there I will pull in the injectors and pressurize the cooling system and see what I find. Anyone have any input or thoughts?

very possible that one did not seal properly, or rather did not seal good enough to last. I did mine back in January and pulled my fiver from South Texas back to Florida the next day. Did you torque the injectors back down to spec, and did you use a good quality torque wrench? Some of the cheap torque wrenches may not actually get you the proper torque.

Do you live in OK?

I have to admit, I did not torque the injectors to spec, that may be my down fall. I will be sure to do that this time, and buy a good torque wrench.

Yes I do live in Oklahoma, in Norman.

Well, i'm betting what happened is a loose injector allowed a cup to rise. I would get in there and replace them all again personally, but you could pull the stick and pressure test to find the suspect, and replace just that one.

I've got the cup tools and am supposed to be up in the Paul's Valley area for a couple days next week. Wouldn't mind handing them off if you'll be back around. Send me a PM if you want to discuss it.

if not a loose injector, clean bore is critical. We used some scotchbrite on a rod in a drill to clean it up. I had to pull the injectors 5 times over the course of a year before I got them all to seal. Each time, one or two were leaking when pressure tested. Ken (woodnthings) and I did the last check and #6 was leaking. Pulled, cleaned and installed a new cup with the correct loctite 620 sealant and the degas bottle is staying clean for the first time since I started this adventure. I am going to buy the cup tools this time as I expect to be back in from time to time. Just my luck.

I'm afraid I may not have got them clean enough also, I hope the 2nd time is the charm, and I don't have to got back in 5 times.

OK... my turn. I had the low-torque injector thing, but my problem wasn't the cups losing the seal: My little prairie dogs lifted enough to allow combustion gasses into the cup area - applying a lot of heat and pressure to the soft brass... plus the fuel O-rings. The net result was poor compression in more than one cylinder (smoke, miss, and knock), combustion pressures reaching the fuel line (making the truck run "jerky" and a fuel pressure gauge going nuts), and a cracked cup (exhaust gasses in degas bottle). Any loose injectors (below 50 in/lbs) now need a fresh set of O-rings/copper washers to address any damage that may have occurred to them. Make sure you put the "pregnant" side of the copper washer facing away from the injector body.

Search for "Stinky's Stick-Up", for a media extravaganza of a successful cup replacement.

Wow, showing on the fuel pressure gauge, that makes sense. Another pro for that gauge. Rich, did you get that bolt thing sorted? Still on topic, sort of.

It's not finished as of today... but I'm doing some tests with Stinky. I will then pop the VCs one last time to do my "permanent" fix that allows me to pull the bolts back out if I ever need to again (hopefully, these sticks will outlive me).

As for the Fuel Pressure gauge, I should have done this in the very beginning - I found a plethora of sins with that dial.

injector cup help !!

I've got my truck tore, have had the cooling presurerized to 30 pounds for 20 minutes, I'm not seeing any coolant leaking in at all. I'm not loosing any pressure either. Should I have seen something by now? As i said before, I did not torque the the injector hold down bolts when I put the cups in 2 months ago. Could that have cause fuel to leach in?

Not into the coolant. If I remember correctly I had a little more show up in my coolant after I.did my cups. Probably just residual. I used paper towels to soak up the fuel on top and haven't seen any since.
