tranny swap

Does anyone know if it is feasible to swap out a Mazda tranny from a 95 F150 2WD, and install a ZF S5-42? I really like my old Ford, 300six, but the poor clutch gets worked to hard with the tall Mazda gears. I regularly haul three to four tons of cargo each week. Yesterday i moved a two yard load of gravel about twenty miles and maneuvered around the rough jobsite... shorter 1st, 2nd and reverse would be so helpful... plus maintaining a tall fifth for highway efficiency. Any advice on this would be helpful.

There are a hundred ZF5 swap threads out there, do a search. In fact, there's one on page one of this forum right now. The short answer is you'll need a ZF5 from a 351 which will have the same bell housing pattern.

If you're crawling around job sites like you say, I'd recommend you install a ZF with transfer case from a 4wd truck. Doesn't have to be hooked to anything in the front. Then you can put it in low range and go as slow as you want to.

You actually have it easy for the swap. I think all you need is the trans, shifter and driveshaft. Everything else should be the same for your current manual trans.
