'02 ranger rich fuel code
Thanks, finally got a chance to check again. Codes are now 0172 & 0175 bank 1 & 2 too rich. Is there any common device that would cause both O2 sensors to show a failed state?
Only thing that I can think of is that I put about 2 gal of "stale" gas with some sat-bil in it a couple of days before the code came up. Is this a possibility?
Thanks
Mike
SO, the question is whats going on upstream of the O2 sensors that could cause that condition. Dirty MAF sensor, leaking fuel injectors, fuel pressure too high, faulty IAT sensor, or engine coolant temp sensor, clogged air filter, are some things that come to mind.
Are these the only trouble codes you have, if not post All code Numbers found, as they can offer up good trouble shooting clues.
when my 2000 began running rich, very rich, it was because the flex fuel module could no longer determine the correct amount of alcohol in the fuel. the higher the percentage of alcohol, the more fuel is needed for normal operation.
the f-f modules were eventually phased out, I'm not sure what year that was.

No it is not flex fuel but but I don't know what the Ethanol content is in the gas, Ca is not required to post it I have been told.
I had filled up with Cheveron gas before I cleared the codes. Took it for a short drive after fixing a wheel bearing issue and so far no new codes but oonly drove about 2-3 miles.
Air filter is clean spark plugs only have ~15-20K on them and engine basically runs great and I get about 21-22 MPG so I don't know what else.
Yes, those were the only two codes.

Chevron is a "Top Tier" fuel & as such is to contain not less than 8% & no more than 10% ethanol. Chevron also has some Techron already blended in, so it might tidy things up some if you continue to use it. It has a good reputation for being a quality fuel, so feel comfortable using it to keep the fuel system, intake valves & piston crowns & combustion chamber tidy.
Not sure what effect the old fuel may of had on things, but if it was added with the tank about full, it would have been diluted a good bit & I don't see how it could cause a rich code for both banks.
If the codes haven't returned, don't worry about it, if they hang around, without any additional code clues, have a look at fuel pressure & if its holding pressure after the engine is shut down & let us know what you find.
If you have, or can come by a scantool that'll read computer live PID feeds from the vehicles engine sensors, have a look at short & long term fuel trim, O2 sensor switching speed & range, MAF sensor PID & let us know what you find.

And yes I have AE with Ford enhanced package for my '01 Powerstroke but I am pretty computer stupid so I will have to stumble through that. Getting the big truck and fifth wheel ready for a road trip this month so hopefully the Ranger will behave for now.
