(New to the site, hey everyone)
I'm looking at buying a 1989 7.3L Ford idi with 180,000 miles. 4x4 with an automatic transmission. Starts up just fine, runs fine, steering is a little loose. But overall is a great truck. I see there is a lot of controversy with cavitation and cranking your *** off trying to get it to start in the winter because of glow plugs.. or something like that. I'm wondering what I should look for when I go to test drive again, or just any additional information. I know basic knowledge of engines, but nothing too extensive. Any help is wanted, badly.
Also, he wants $3700.. How's that price?
Thanks fellas,
Bryan
3700 is a high price tag for a 24 year old truck, but 180k miles is just broken in. It depends a lot on where you are at and the condition of the truck. Bring a sca test kit, make sure it is COLD (block cold to the touch) when you get there, and ask for service records. Cold starts will tell you a lot about how the overall service of the truck has gone. If he warms it up, he is probably hiding something!
Don't take it personal 89, we get a lot of newbie posts like this around here. Sometimes it is difficult to remember, that we were all newbies at one time! Even an old codger like Hairy LOL! Once you get used to navigating the site, there is a ton of information available to you. Welcome to the forum. Just funnin Hairy, don't hate me because I'm beautiful!
I mighta come off a little gruff... I opened the thread expecting someone needing help rather than an opinion.
Run motorcraft glow plugs and SCA's that will take care of your two concerns. The other is air intrusion which is more than thoroughly covered around here.
E40D or C6? Seems a little on the steep side, how bout a pic? F250 or F350? If it was a crew cab F350, the price is understandable. But either auto will probably require some attention soon.
Frankly for these trucks it depends a lot on location, around here 2wd anything sells dirt cheap, while finding a clean bodied 4X4 IDI is $3k (bit more if turbo), heck my beat to hell truck was $1500 and at the time that was half the price of any IDI for sale locally and it came with a turbo (and supposedly fresh injectors...which I later learned were still factory originals)
Look on craigslist around your area and see what others are going for. For me, that's a pretty steep price if the owner didn't maintain the SCAs. I paid around $1700 for my F350 4x4 6.9 a few years ago, and have been offered much more for it since.
The whole Cummins diesel craze lately has jacked up the cost of most of the mechanical diesels I see for sale now (not so much the 6.2s though ).
