On my 02, starting at about 60 miles per hour and never below that speed, I have the type of howling noise I would normally associate with a wheel bearing or possibly something in the transfer case going south.
It is more noticeable from the driver's side and not much audible from the passenger side. I can consistently reproduce it at speed, but never below. It does not seem to be related to how hard the engine is loaded, for example, it is present on the flat and on hills and does not change with egt. If I run 55, it is not present. Ditto towing or running untethered.
I have had the wheels up and they seem to spin freely with no grinding and I have also tried just coasting in neutral on a hill, although not at speed and all is quiet.
What happens in neutral over 60? Accelerating/decelerating?
I was due for differential lube lately and I did it, and I've heard of a pinion gear causing this issue recently. Do you have 4X4? Have you checked to make sure the front drive line spins freely while in Park? Sawtooth wear on the inside or outside of the front tires?

I do have 4x4 and the front driveline does spin freely when in park. I had suspected that at first. I believe I did go to neutral over 60 and the howl was still there, but the part I can't get my head around is where does the noise go below 60? It is really undetectable!
Usually when I think of something that is speed dependent I think in terms of a harmonic of some kind. My truck is pretty low miles with less than 60K on the clock so I expected that to argue against major component failure, unless I hit bad luck.
Nothing changes in the truck between 55 and 60 except fuel flow, ICP, and air flow/boost - so it's likely harmonic. I'm at a disadvantage for speculation because I don't have my ears there.

I am not sure I know how to do it, but I there must be a way to record the sound on my cell phone and post it here.
I was wondering at first of something weird was going on with the fan hub, but the sound is more distinct on the driver's side. I will try to gather more information tomorrow.
