400 CID Spark Plug Removal

Hi Guys,

Sorry if this has been discussed before, I always do my due diligence and try to look around first but the search function on this site really sucks (no offense).

Does anyone have any tips for easiest access to #6<edit: actually="" this="" is="" #4="">(edit: this is #4) and #8 (rearmost on either bank) spark plugs? I just ripped out the #8 plug wire innards accidentally while trying to remove it by the boot (not the wire), due to poor angle of attack. Otherwise following best procedures -- hand aligning plug wrench, hand turning after break loose or before torquing. I am wondering if it's better to try to come from bottom on #6<edit: actually="" this="" is="" #4=""></edit:></edit:><edit: actually="" this="" is="" #4=""><edit: actually="" this="" is="" #4="">(edit: this is #4)(pass. side) since all the heater hoses and crap are in the way.

Question #2 ... if there is rust and water marks on my plug and past threads of the plug what might this mean? Plug was moderately damaged from arc material re-location. Same on #4</edit:></edit:>(edit: this is #6)<edit: actually="" this="" is="" #4=""><edit: actually="" this="" is="" #4=""><edit: actually="" this="" is="" #6=""> plug except rust and watermarks.

Question #3 ... if plugs are stamped "Autolite-01" is that any indicator of age aka is that plug from 2001 ? Truck is new to me since April so I'm coming in from place of not knowing when last plug changeout was. These plugs look like they could be that old.

Thanks!</edit:></edit:></edit:>

Not sure what kind of 400 you have, but my 400 (1978) has cylinders 1,2,3, and 4 on the passenger side and 5,6,7,and 8 are on drivers side. I use a universal joint with my spark plug socket when attempting to pull my plugs out. Helps me get a good angle on them.

Must be thinking of the Chebby pattern.

I think I did pull the #8 plug from underneath.

I've yanked boots of plugs on multiple occasions. I'd recommend a pair of boot pliers SBP3, Pliers, Boot, Vinyl Coated Offset Jaw Tips

Sorry you're correct I swapped the number 4 and 6 in my head.

I'll have to check that out, or use more dielectric grease and less elbow kind.

When I left my truck it was #'s 4 and 8 but when I sat down at my laptop it became #'s 6 and 8. Short bus for me.

I'll get out the universal socket thing. Thank you.
