I am going to be changing my fluid and filter tomorrow on my automatic transmission, I was wondering if there is anything I need to know about? Does it have a inline filter as well?
Is your truck an early build with the outside filter? If so it may not apply to you but for those trucks with the internal filter only to really chage the fluid requires the use of a heat generating machine. There is no drain plug in the TC so without the heated exchange you can only get about 8 quarts out, a little over half. There is a 170 degree tstat in the filter lines that won't let the rest of the fluid come out. If you have the external filter I don't know. Somebody will tell us soon.
I have an early job 1 and the external filter. If you have the external, it would be a good idea to change it out. I have had the transmission flushed, at the Ford House, but was not aware of the hot flush. I guess I am a little confused, I am hearing a 170 degree Tstat, so my transmission runs at about 155 degrees going down the hiway at 70. 179-199 towing, I would tend to believe I may not have that high of a TSTAT? Anyway to the OP, if you have the external filter the number is FT-176 and its on Amazon for about 80 bucks. There have been reports of stripping and rounding of the connecting nuts. So be careful as they are soft and torqued on pretty good. A good line wrench should suffice.
Thanks for the tips guys, I discovered something very serious. The transmission filler tube is rusting from the inside out and I need to replace it NOW. Ford wants $300 + $30 part. Has anyone changed this before? It looks simple enough maybe remove the air intake and the side mounts for the tube and replace it.
Be careful when putting the filler tube back into place. It, like the oil dipstick tube has an O-ring that can get 'rolled' if the tube is not properly placed. Then it will leak like crazy! Lube the tube up well. Speaking from experience on my work truck.
