TorqShift Maintenance schedule

So I was looking through my diesel supplement, looking for information about how often the transmission needs to be serviced. I figured it was every 30,000 miles, and I was going to post this thread simply to ask why this tranny needs fresh fluid every 30,000 miles, whereas every other Ford tranny can go over 100,000 miles on the same fluid.

But what I found was something that I almost didn't catch. I'll post it here...

60,000 miles

Change automatic transmission fluid on all vehicles equipped
with the Torqshift transmission. Replace the externally
mounted remote filter element for all Torqshift (if equipped).
Replace the internal Torqshift transmission fluid filter located
inside the transmission bottom pan (vehicles without externally
mounted remote filter only). Inspect automatic transmission
fluid level on all other vehicles if equipped with dipstick.
Consult your dealer for particular requirements.
So now it seems as if those of us with later build '08s only need to service the tranny every 60,000 miles, by virtue of the internal filter. WHY?

I don't know the answer to your question, but, at 102,000 my trans fluid looks and smells new. My dealer service manager and diesel mechanic both just tell me, don't worry about it. I ask them if it should be serviced just to be sure and they tell me no, it's fine.

I can't find an external filter on mine. It was built 06/07.

I think it means to say everyone should change the fluid at 30k, 60k, 90k, etc. If you have an external filter you should change it with each fluid change. If you have an internal filter you need to change it every other fluid change.
The external filter isnt as efficient as the internal one so thats probably why the interval for the filter itself is different. I think the filter area is much smaller for the external as well so it cant hold as much "dirt". The internal filter is fairly large and sits inside all the fluid where the external filter must pass everything through a 3/8 inch line (just guessing its 3/8).
One last thought is that the internal filter catches all "dirt" before it enters the rest of your transmission. The external filter doesnt catch it until the fluid/dirt has already passed through the pump on its way to the cooler.

The Job 1 trucks with the external had a smaller internal filter which is one reason for the 30K maint.

My interpretation is with the larger pan and filter of the later trucks 60K is your interval.

I just had mine changed at 42,000 kilometers, just for the fact that it is on paper that mine had it done by ford in case something should happen down the road ford cant say too bad you didnt follow service schedual.

trust me i didnt want to pay the $389 plus taxes but, in my 05 6.0, i had two of these trannies go and each time it was $5500. for them to re and re covered by me ESP. And they sent a Ford adjuster up each time and he asked if i had it serviced!

After reading it again I think I agree with you. The 30k says for torqshifts with external filters while the 60k says all trucks with torqshift.

Measure twice, cut once......hmmm, maybe I should read twice and type once.

08"s and up have a real internal filter that actually filters. The 03 to 07 internal filters stop trees and boulders and usually don't need changing unless the tranny is being rebuilt or it has grenaded. I personally change my ext. filter every 10,000 miles which equates to every other oil change. Side note: our local dealer does the 30,000 tranny flush for 199.00. That is for an 03 to 07. Didn't ask about an 08 or up but they do have real int. filters.

I don't think it means that at all. You are to flush at 30k, then again at 60k, and so on every 30k.

If you have an external filter, change it every 30k.

If you have an internal filter, change it every 60k, which is every other fluid flush. They let you skip dropping the pan every other flush.
