98 ranger 8plug 4cyl
My BF has a 98 not sure of the Litres but its the 4 cyl motor with 8 plugs
his catalytic converter started to plug up and he is saying that caused the bearings in the lower end to go out???
can someone explain a little more clearly what happened?
I know bits and pieces on working on rides and open to learning...especially if the ride is gonna be in my yard any length of time...
he just got a used motor but we dont know its condition either but i am mainly wondering what went on inside his...
His catalytic converter started to plug up because the engine was not tuned properly.
The bearings int he lower end only fail due to a loss of lubrication. Thats what caused the engine to fail. The failing engine also ruined the catalytic converter, not the other way around. It is not possible for a plugged converter to cause bearing failure.
The best prevention for such problems is to use a good quality oil, with a good quality oil filter, and to change the oil when it starts to get dirty, and to make sure the oil level is correctly maintained. Also cooling system maintenance is critical, if the cooling is not maintained, the head gasket can fail. If antifreeze gets into the oil, it can cause bearing failure. Also if antifreeze gets into the combustion chambers, if can foul and plug a catalytic converter.
