Changing steering columns would have to include moving, disconnecting, and re-connecting wires, including the ignition switch, etc.
Your electric fuel pump will activate and operate only after turning the key to start for safety reasons.
If that connection is "open" after the work, you could possibly turn the engine over but not activate the fuel pump.
I would go back with a vom and test for 12v's off the ignition switch and make sure all lines are re-connected.
