I have a 1979 F150 4x4. 4 speed manual transmission. Remanufactured ATK 351modified engine. I bought the truck used. I am not a mechanic and I would like to know how to determine exactly what type of transmission I do have and what is the gear ratio and or other pertinent details. Can anybody tell me something very obvious that I simply do not know? Hopefully I'll have her in the garage soon for all to see. I struggling with getting around this site yet as a new user. Hope I've posted in the right place but could not find a "transmission" forum?
With 4 on the floor you probably have A New Process 435 trans, but you could also have a Borge and Warner T18. I think there should be a tag on the trans somewhere.
Thanks for your reply. I can actually look for a tag and I do have Haynes and Chiltons manuals for the truck to help me locate. Would one or the other type of transmission also indicate the gear ratio?
Do you mean the gear ratio for the axles or the ratios for the transmission? There should be an axle code in the door jam that will tell you what gear ratio you have in your axles (also a transmission code). You could post that code on here and we can decode it for you, or you could look it up in your Haynes and Chiltons manuals.
TRANS code stamped on 2nd line of Warranty Plate, which is located on the left door face below the latch: A = New Process 435 / F = Borg Warner T-18.
But info may not be accurate, because people replaced damaged left doors with used doors. 99.9% of the time, they failed to install the original Warranty Plates on the replaced doors.
There's another way to ID both and it can be done from inside the cab by looking at the shift lever.
NP 435 shift lever retainer cap (B8T-7220-D) is spring loaded, has two notches, is retained in place by two visible pins that protrude from shift tower.
T-18 shift lever retainer cap (8MTH-7220) threads off/on. Once removed, roll pin visible among threads, retains shift lever in place.
Thanks so much to all who have replied. This is so helpful number dummy just the kind of Infoline need. Thanks to everyone for being so helpful and friendly
