i just bought an 88 f250, 4x4 7.3 na truck. i love the mechanichal IH motors but i love my turbodiesels too. im good with a wrench but not so good with airflow graphs and such. on the Smogie build thread h was singing the praises of the s300 chassis turbos. i was curious if anyone with more experience than me could tell me if this was a good choice for a build very similar to his, as my uses are much like his. thanks very much in advance for all advice!
The S300 series turbos are a lot of turbo for a stock fuel pump. Smogie is running a 180cc DB4 injection pump that delivers almost 3x the amount of fuel as the stock IP. At those levels of fuel and boost you are definitely in head stud territory, cam, intercooler etc., before you choose a turbo, you need to know what else, if anything, you will be doing to your engine. If you are just adding turbo, without studs and a whole build up, definitely look for something a little smaller that boosts to around 10-15 psi. If you are doing a full blown build, then study what others here are doing, in detail, before you decide which turbo is right for your goals. Most of the high end builds, including Smogie, are going with the Aurora 3000. Expensive but efficient. You will also want to think about how you will mount and pipe the turbo... whether you will be using parts from an existing turbo system or completely custom fabricating your own. If you are using an existing system, ATS, Banks, etc., and want a different charger, you will want something that is compatible mount-wise and configuration wise to make your modification work. As far as new kits go, I think your only choices are Banks or Hypermax.
Not sure if you have found/read this thread yet, but it should help... https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...er-thread.html
im gonna do al the supporting mods offered through R&D (studs, cam, intake) SD intercooler and either 150cc or 180cc pump depending on the streetability of the 180cc pump. if i understood correctly the milling process involved to make the DB4 flow like that is verrrry in depth. its a c6 now, either going 5 speed or OD unit like NMB2. id like slightly modified cummins level power much like Racins original build up. like the side mount idea, thought of doing the very same thing about a year ago. i can fabricate and my father can as well, he is far better though. so with all that information does that seem like a wise turbo choice? first diesel build, i was and still am a fox body man.
I would wait and see how the A3000 does with clearing 180cc's of fuel on Racin's truck, and what it puts down for dyno numbers. It's compressor wheel is super light for its size so it should spool really well and be more efficient than comparably sized turbos. From what we've seen on xcite's build it looks like a really good turbo for our built up engines.
If you just do a mild or relatively stock engine, a hx35 might be a good foundation. It's a t-3 flange which gives a broad selection of turbos to choice from.
