What is this spring?

While replacing the defrost hoses on my 56 F100- I spotted this spring sitting behind the dash above the ashtray. It doesn't appear to be attached to anything. The first pic is of the spring layong across ashtray inside the dash. The second is looking up at it ...with the ashtray open...inside of dash.
