We've only had our unit shown below for a little over a year now. I don't drive it much but when I do I work it pretty hard. I'm using a full synthetic crankcase oil and was using a Bosch Premium oil filter. I immediately noticed engine noise upon cold start up that I hadn't noticed prior to using the Bosch filter. I had the Ford dealer that I purchased this truck from change the oil as part of the deal so naturally it was a Motorcraft filter on the truck just prior to installing the Bosch.
I just want to say for the record this is no indictment of the Bosch filter.
When I looked in the owners manual for unrelated information I ran across a passage stating only genuine Motorcraft oil filters should be used and use of other brands could result in cold start up engine noise.
Since I only put around 4000 miles a year on this unit I obviously don't change oil very often but when I did earlier this Spring I went with a Motorcraft filter and have not heard any clatter at cold start up since.
What's most incredulous is that the Motorcraft filter is considerably cheaper than the Bosch. The Bosch also has the drain back protection as does the Motorcraft, as well. I'm curious as to the reason for this and if anyone else has experienced the same thing.
You are not alone , many owners had the same observation . It is highly recommended that you stick with Motocraft oil filter ( I keep few at home just in case ) .
The other suggestion is , do not let your truck sit for months without running at all . I do not put a lot of miles in recent years (like you ) , but I make sure that I do two short drives a week to keep parts lubricated (and change oil every 6 months or 3K miles whichever comes first- as per my ford manual).
