Been awhile since I last posted but I have a very annoying cold start rattle sound. I have replaced belt, both idle pullies and tensioner. I am running Mobil 1 5-20 and I am at about 80,000 miles. It sounds like a valve issue to me but I am not sure. Any ideas out there? Ford STEALER tried telling me it was the FRAM oil filter I used. I put Motorcraft on now and still have the issues.
Use some BG 44K fuel treatment ( $20 or so a can) may take more than one treatment, but it can help reduce or eliminate carbon and reduce the noise. Worked on my 98 Lincoln. Now I add a can at every oil change.
Fram filters are the worst filter you can ever use. I believe the "dealer" was referring to the Fram filters low flow. Ive had the same problem on Mitsubishi and Nissan motors that have hydraulic lifters. Fram plain sucks getting oil up to those lifters in the cold (just saying for example). If youve changed the filter to a better one, youve just gotta let your engine warm up when its cold. Mine does the same exact thing. Its more of a knocking than a rattle, and it goes away in a few seconds to a minute.
Good point on the filter!
Plus make sure the filter has the anti-drainback valve. The 820S Motorcraft has this valve. When I change the oil I fill the filter with oil, then let is sit to get soaked up (otherwise is just spills over everything) then install it, it helps a little more oil get to the engine on that first start up after the change.
