Tranny pan purchase suggestions?

I am about to do a fluid change cause the pan is leaking after every time I park it.

so why not add the bigger pan for more fluid and cooling abilities. (suggestion from fellow Van guy, thanks Tim)

Riff. as a Derale one for $169 and have found the same one on Amazon for $125.

my question is how deep are these. I do have a 4x4 van, but the thing looks big (or deep). and are those cooling tubes of any concern for leaks?

I am already pushing my budget with the mer thought of a new pan, but I think it will pay off down the road.

I would love a new Aluminum Mag tech or something, but there way out of my price range.

I am also open to other options, hence the thread.

any help would be helpful.

also if I go with a deeper pan, do I need to get something else along the lines of a pick up or something? if its deeper does the oil still get picked up ok?

thanks

Mark has told us (a few times) that the larger/finned pans don't offer ANY additional cooling improvements over the stock pans.

I'd hate for you to spend (possibly waste) any cash on something unneeded.

Do you have a hole or crack?

Why is it leaking?

As stated, and in my opinion as well no justification for the additional cost. OEM should be less than $40 if you still need one. Part # F81Z-7A194-BA from Tousley for example is $36.

I suggested that MTDewX install the oem Ford 4x4 F350 deeper transmission pan which must be used with the oem Ford 4x4 F350 deeper transmission filter. Not only does the oem Ford 4x4 F350 deeper pan hold more fluid, but it has a drain plug. From Ford, even the list prices seem reasonable. This is the deep "pan assembly" and deep filter "screen" from my invoice July 2012:

F81Z*7A194*BA 736 PAN AS List $55.10

YC3Z*7A098*BA 178 SCREEN List $44.33

The 2x4 tranny gasket is re-usable and can be re-used with the deeper pan.

But I agree with BigAlsPSD, why/where is your tranny leaking?

My logic was, once the E350 2x4 van is converted to 4x4, the 4R100 should have the pan that the F350 4x4 came with.

grec-o-face: I get it that Mark sees no benefit in going with a pan larger than the oem Ford F350 4x4 pan, but I wonder if he would disagree with my logic of replacing the shallower oem E350 2x4 pan with the oem Ford F350 4x4 pan once the E350 2x4 is converted to 4x4?

The reason the 4x2 E4ODs had a shallow pan was for ground clearance. The 4x4 had the deep pan to keep the pickup tube under the fluid level at more extreme tilts that 4x4 trucks can operate at.

All 4R100 transmissions in the E-series had the deeper pan.

"All 4R100 transmissions in the E-series had the deeper pan. "

Interesting... My van definitely had the shallower pan, so maybe I have an E40D?

Mark, where can I check for the type of transmission my E350 has?

Far be it for me to correct Mark, but he probably meant all 4R100 transmissions in the F-series trucks had the deeper pan, since all the SuperDuty 250/350's have the deeper pan.

So basically, MTDew X already has a deep 4x4 pan.

EDIT: In fact, based on this part of Mark's post:

...I'd say it's almost a certainty he meant to post F-series and not E-series.

Stewart: Thanks!

MTDewX: Yes you need the deeper filter (I put the part no. above) to pickup the fluid in the deeper trans pan. Using a deeper pan with the shallower E350 filter 4x2 is a no no. And I was told will cause overheating and a failure.

I prefer using oem Ford parts, but this Baldwin deep pan filter comes with a gasket (although it does not look like the Ford reusable gasket but since the deeper pan comes with a drain plug, maybe not such an issue):

(Notice the longer tube which goes up into the bottom of the transmission (valve body?) and seats the filter on the bottom of the deeper pan. A shallow filter would just fall out into the bottom of a deeper pan I guess.)

"Descriptions: Transmission Filter Notes: Pan gasket contains [20] bolt holes. Contains: [1] Rubber Neck Seal Fits: Ford Automotive, Light-Duty Trucks, Vans with E40D, 4R100 Transmissions (4WD, RWD, Deep Pan) Replaces: Ford YC3Z-7A098-BA Size: 11 15/32 x 6 29/32 x 4 3/16(291.3 x 175.4 x 106.4) Pan Gasket: [1] Included UPC: 791440060388"

If it is newer than 1998 it has a 4R100. The E4OD was out of production by then.

Maybe I was wrong on the pans...I'm not 100% sure on the E series, but I thought all 4R100 except some F-150s had the deep pan.

I can take a picture of it tomorrow. I am guessing its a shallow pan.

tomorrow i will track down a truck in a parking lot to compare.

where isn't my van leaking or seeping. I am only trying to pic my battles as I can afford.

the tranny pan leaves a noticable road mark after driving. its not a visual drip, just a road stain. one of my pet peeves is one of my vehicles leaving its mark where ever I park it.

the back passenger side area is where the drips are coming form. I wipe it before I drive it (which isn't very often) then look the following day to find fluid.

with 332k miles I stop trying to fix or re-use things, but replace them when I can. so I would get a new gasket for sure.

Tim, I didn't grasp the connection of the pic you were drawing for me. I should be able to find a tranny pan easy enough from a truck.

thanks all

I just realized you don't have a SuperDuty, but a van, so disregard my statement above about you having a 4x4 pan.

Do you have a drain plug on your pan?
