What is the closest color match for the Gold paint on the 65 valve covers.
Closest color match.
Brand name.
Can I get something 'close' to that color at AutoZone or OReilly.
I really don't want to have to mix paint for that small of job. AND I sure as hell don't want to be buying 10 different shades of Gold. The lids on the paint cans never look like what the paint looks like.
Thanks, Fritz
Well, that looks pretty nice but thank you for teasing me by not listing the stock # on the can... Don't suppose you have the can setting around or maybe know the #... Myself, I can't seem to through anything away so if it has even a very small amount left - its most likely still on the shelf from 10 yrs ago...

Ill look at my paint supply and see if its still around. Im pretty sure I didnt use the whole can on just 2 valve covers. Stand-by.
That sounds great, thanks. I went by the auto store today to see if I could find something that looks right, DAAAAAAAAA. 9 different colors of gold and after looking at them all, they all started to look RED. Or maybe that was just the blood bleeding out of my eyes.
Fritz
Buzz44, did you say your name was Vic? Sorry if I got it wrong. Did you every find an old can of that gold laying around. Went to HomeDepot today and as big as that store is,,, only one can of gold and it was wrinkle finish.

By the way Fritz yes the handle from birth is Vic. Hey I did find the can I used it is a color called pure gold. 245221 is the # in front of the pure gold name on the code on the back of the can. It is a light metallic universal advanced formula color. I painted it on a dark colored door just to test yesterday and it came out looking darker than my valve covers. I think the covers came out looking light because we sprayed it right on the bare metal. I would probably use a light colored primer if I were to paint some more covers with it. Wow its hard to believe thats all they had for gold. I think there is a problem with people who huff paint really liking the gold for some reason. Maybe they have to go thru to much red tape to get gold paint in areosol cans stocked. Damn druggies causing problems every where. Just wanted to say it seems to be holding pretty good thru 1 summer driving ciruit and another comming up. I do a cruz over in Idaho that is 3 hours of continuous slow driving if that doesn cook it off I dont know what will. This will be year 2 for that. Motor operating at 170 to 180 most of the time.
I went back over to HomeDepot this afternoon. A friend of mine told me this morning that he saw a gold paint up on the top shelf. I found it. It says 'Pure Gold metallic universal advanced formula like you mentioned but the stock # was different, 261399. Maybe they changed the stock # from 2 yrs ago. It says its good to 200 deg, which means it most likely good to 250+. I'm sure they just want to cover their ***.
Anyway, I gave it a try on a couple different items and it looks pretty good. little shiny. Did the 'shiny' dull down a little after a couple yrs? I agree with what you said about spraying on a lighter backround. I sprayed some on a black sureface and again on a white back round. Looks much better on a lighter back round.
Thanks again for the info.

This is what i fould out. One of the guys on another FE site gave me the below info, so I called them and sure enough, they tell me thats as close as they could find to match the 65' valve cover so thats what they sell. Not sure what the exact name is for the original paint on the 65' cover. Maybe someone knows and they are keeping it a secret.
Anyway, the paint from Dearborn is:
Plasti-Kote Universal Gold #223
I found one at my local autoparts store that has it in stock and will pick it up today. Than I will have that one, and a can of the "pure gold" Rust-Oleum I got at Homedepoo. I'll see which one looks close. I have one almost new stock gold valve covers thats been up on the shelf in the shed since it was new. Replaced the stock ones on that motor, way back, for a set of M/Ts, soon after it was born. Have NO idea where the other one went. One of those "growing legs" things I guess. Ex-wife most likely used it as a flower pot.

Sounds like it died a miserable death. Well let me know how i turns out color wise. I still have a set to do.
Hi Fritz I backtracked your posts on the FE site. I looked at the can of paint that you are lined up with and put the add in my favorites. In the pic it looks real close to the rustoleum color. Ill wait to see how it turns out for you and yes I saw that Comet motor color guide in PDF form. Great stuff.
