I changed the differential fluid in the front differential today on my 4x4 excursion and noticed some wear. What causes this and what should I do?
The old fluid was slightly shinny like it had metal in it.

Looks good to me, do you have a better picture?, Does it whine?
The flat shinny area at the center of the picture, you can see the difference in the pots in the cast metal vs the smooth part that has some wear.
I have tried to crop and post some more pics, difficult on my phone. There is a new album called "differential" that has two cropped pics.
But the pinion isn't shiny on the end, I am betting that lip was ground after casted at the factory to clear the pinion.
I see some nicks in the middle but he needs a better picture of the pinion. The middle is raised and that's right about where it would hit.
OP; we need a picture of the end of the pinion gear.
