Okay, so here is my situation. Before I take this to a shop I was wondering if I could get a few opinions. I recently purchased a 1979 Ford F150 with a 351M. I did an oil and coolant change, installed a Weiland Action+ Intake Manifold, Holly 600CFM four barrel with vacuum secondaries, FelPro valve covers and breathers, and removed all the EGR components. FelPro gaskets all around. I spent a few days tuning the carb and distributer. Just installed a new battery, battery cables, and spark plug wires. I took it out for the first time today. Big problem. It'll start up and idle just fine. Smooth running down the driveway. But as soon as I give it gas to pull off, it pops and sputters . I really can't explain the exact sound. Maybe a quiet backfire? At first I thought I blew a gasket. But I checked all the gaskets. No problem there. Running 90 octane so I don't think it's a knock, but I don't know. Any suggestions?
did you time the engine after you put the intake and distributor back on? it soulds like to me that maybe the timing is a little bit off or else the distributor is messed up some how.
Thanks guys! I timed it by max vacuum in manifold, so I knew that wasn't it. But the distributor is stock so I was afraid I was going to have to buy a new one. But while looking at build pictures I found I swapped two spark plug wires!! Even though I labeled them. Thanks again!
