no cummins is is a heavy equitment diesel engine company. they are an old company. about half the big trucks you see on the road have big cummins engines in them. they are some of the best diesel engines you can buy. even the small b series engines [the 5.9's] they put in the dodge trucks are top of the line. now dont get me wrong i like the powerstroke but they dont have anything on the cummins........wish they would put them in the fords

Any truth to this?
Giving you a hard time?? NOOO!!! He was stroking you. Cummin's diesel is a manufacture of diesel engines, they sell their product to other manufactures that build trucks, generators, ect. "Ford sold the technology to Dodge", Come on now!!! Tell your "Buddy"
he has had toooo many bad drugs!
I was reading a Manual on a Cat engine and it said something about recommending that you put a set of main bearings in every 100k miles Is that true because this manual was off a 3208 that me friend wants to put in a 92 f250 with a junk 7.3 nnon turbo that he blew the head gasket I think on last summer.

, I knew you would pop up on this one,how many threads have had this rumor, Ford owning cummins, making deals with dodge, dodge cant make a crew cab because ford wont let them!!I'm telling ya guys,if one of your bud's tells you things like this, ask them if they have or have had black lights and Jimi Hendricks posters in their family room and like to play songs with long drum solo's?
: Cat engine, main bearings at 100k,a 3208 to boot!! You have'nt been playing those old 8 tracks have you??
Yeah, until it breaks, then you wish you had a Cummins when you see the repair bill, or parts cost! Yoweee!
Cats are IMO probably the best motor out there, they are also the most expensive. Cats are also smokers, and that aint good with the DOT and their darn emissions testing garbage! Dollar for dollar, you get more out of a Cummins, parts are everywhere and they are far less expensive. At least for big rigs anyway.

Just Gruvin, Lenny
I'm telling you I read it out of a CAT manual with my own eyes. No firend told a friend who told me. I I I I SAW IT. I could not believe it Hopefully it is a miss print or maybe a book to a different engine but It came with the engine. I don't know where he got the engine but he got a 10speed tranny with it.
You can talk to any big truck driver and they'll be sure to tell you. The 3208 falls in the same category as the triple-nickel. It's a throw away motor, hence changing the mains at 100k. I'd definitely go with the Cummins 5.9, 12 valve, of course. I know a guy who getting 1000 hp and 1200 lb. torque on em with the factory engine. Only problem is he keeps blowing holes in the pistons. The 24 valves are nice, but they're computer controlled. The old 12 valves have been put in everything from generators, to Dodge p.u., to the Ford F-650 and F-750 (read the catalog, you can get one!) to motor graders and bulldozers. He can probably even use his 10-speed tranny with an adapter.
I told him to rebuild the 7.3 and put a banks turbo kit on it. He swears by Cat so its his money. I don;t really care anyways he stiffed me on a turbo for my truck which I paid for and he sold on me so I have not talked to him in a month now.

If the Cat 3208's were so bad then, why were there so many put in trucks and boats??? And tell me why that our dump truck with a 3208 has 230k with no main bearing ever being replaced and runs like a top? Throw away motor?? I think not. Only reason you say that is because they're not made anymore, due to emissions requirements. The same thing will hit the Cummins in a few years.
If it was at all possible, I'd rather have a John Deere engine under my hood over anything else out there.
There were probably so many used because there weren't too many other options for a small diesel engine. Once again, I speak as a broad generalization. Nothing against your 3208. A good friend of mine swears by them also. I'm sure yours is great, and you probably treat it respectfully and perform routine maintenance on it. I've seen on several boat chat boards that even has them saying to avoid the 3208's. I honestly have not had any experience with, so I'm only relaying information from two very experienced truckers; one dump truck and one OTR driver. Of course, they're also pulling big loads, not constant speed situations like a boat or generator, or even motor graders. Again, congrats on yours, but still, 230K isn't that many for diesel anyhow.
