DOOR and HOOD SECURITY ?

How to LOCKUP the front doors and hood ?
Installed a comprehensive Omega alarm system.

But I wan t to walk away from the van for a few days kayaking. Van is in a 'safe' area but of course it is not.

A few minutes with a window rod and zap THEY are in.

Method ?

My old 80 pickup had a locking hood latch option. Instead of the regular "T" handle under the dash, it was a chrome one with a lock in the middle where you put a key to unlock it, otherwise you could not pull it to open the hood. It would seem to me you could possibly find one on a truck or van and retro-fit it on your van. It's just a cable, and I am assuming your van is just a cable also. You might have to re-position the assembly and abandon your original one. Or.....

Possibly you could take the release you have now and remount it behind a panel somewhere to hide it out of site. Or put some sort of sturdy metal plate over it with a lock, just don't mount anything to the plastic that they cam easily rip out.

Nothing is going to prevent them from actually breaking one of the windows and getting in. Your best bet there is to have one of those locking tool boxes that fit in the bed of a truck, and lock stuff in that. Hopefully it will be strong enough that they can't get in. You can bolt it to the floor of the van. They have all different kinds, some of them are wide and flat with long drawers that pull out, so you can still pile stuff on top of them, they sort of raise the floor about 12 inches.

A trailer and a winch will enable anyone to leave with your van.... insure it and cross your fingers! Don't leave any valuables in sight. Locks will keep honest people honest.

Leaving anything anywhere for a few days is inviting trouble----not from honest people mind you so locks, disguises or anything else simply won't work to deter those intent on having your stuff. Not trying to be a downer but that's the sad fact of life these days.

Is there anyway to park your truck in a truly secure location and be transported to your kayak embarkation point? The second best thing would be pulling the fuse for the shift interlock solenoid and/or removing the battery. Still though those few days gives the crooks more than enough time to return with another way to have your truck.

my general method of security is to make the van look like it isn't worth a criminal's time. as others said, no valuables in sight, but i would also suggest you make sure its dirty and doesn't attract people for looking abnormally bright and attractive. beyond that, people can get past locks if they try. and if you put on some big super-duty lock system, a criminal is going to see that as an invitation because there must be something good inside.
