Had this engine in this truck for a few months and have driven maybe 2000 miles, headed out to work and didn't get a block and heard a severe rattle or maybe a knock, thought at first a rod. Drove a few miles to a relatives house unloaded the tools i would need and took it back home, to work on it later, a few days later i started it up again and the rattle or knock seems to be gone, not sure but i think maybe a lifter but thought i would ask some pros, this is my first 7.3
Sometimes leaky injectors can sound like a bad knock. Try filling the fuel filter with seafoam or other similar cleaner, run the engine for 30 seconds or so then shut it off and let sit for a half hour. Then, take it for a drive and thrash it a couple of times. Then start using a quality fuel additive if you aren't already.
Pull the injectors and look for wet / soot caked tips. Back when i replaced mine i had two leaking and one was very sooty. Made a noticable difference, not that it was very bad in the first place, but lost the little smoke at idle, and did run smoother.
Ya, just need to get it in the shop and start looking for the problem, hoping for something simple like injectors and not bearings, i will check injectors too, thanks for the info.
