Oil Cooler-Promise Not About How To Do It lol!

Hey gents,

Wow so upon login I realized its been 6 years since I last logged in to FTE I hope everyone has been doing well. So as a quick set up for the question/questions I'm about to ask I still have old blue. 04' 250 crew cab fx4 6.0. He's now rolled over 226,000 and still doing great. I should further mention since it was 1 week old the egr has been closed and unplugged and have been running mobil 1 5/40 or delvac 1 5/40 as well as power service in every tank. Never done anything to it besides an alternator. Obviously not including batteries/brakes etc. never touched a single injected or anything else and still avg 19/20 mpg highway empty. Summer is now here and I tow between 6,000-8,000 lbs a weekend depending what toys we bring or don't bring along with the camper to the lake. I have no gunk in my oil or coolant. Just wondering if the oil cooler should be changed or let it roll for a while longer. I realize being almost 250,000 it wouldn't be a bad idea but my truck
Has never been ran with EGR and always a full synthetic. I believe strongly in maintenance but at the same time spending $300 when it doesn't need to be spent is pointless. Any pointers? Thoughts? How has everyone else done with their trucks? Thanks!!

I wouldnt touch it unless you are showing signs of trouble. This would be with a gauge like a scan gauge 2. This will let you see the difference between the coolant temp and the oil temp. Need to have it warmed up fully, running 65 mph or so unloaded down the highway. If the oil temp is 15 degrees higher than the coolant temp then I would seriously look at doing the oil cooler and possibly the egr cooler if its failed also. Are you loosing any coolant from the degas bottle?

Also in the 6 years you have been gone it has been found out that running with your egr valve unplugged causes issues with cooling. The pcm needs that signal to operate your cooling fan properly. People with deletes will just leave them in there plugged in to get that signal to the pcm.

That is not necessarily true with the 03-04 trucks.

With our without a functional EGR, advice is the same. You need to get a Scangage or other tool to monitor coolant temp and oil temp delta. It is the coolant side of the oil and EGR coolers that will plug, so it matters not whether you have been recirculating the exhaust gasses. Your oil cooler can still clog, then burst, then new engine.

The only things that might prevent the issue is 1) coolant filter and 2) coolant maintenance.
