Another EOT vs. ECT thread?

A little background first. The 2004 6.0 PSD is fairly new to me, about 2 months. The truck has an Edge platinum on it (flame me if you wish, it was on the truck when purchased). Have the edge set to 0 (stock) and useing if for guages only.

After doing alot of reading on this site and asking some other questions I have been questioning a few things.

Since the truck is new to me, the first thing I did was change the oil and the filters (stock filters), I also changed both fuel filters.

Since I have been reading on this site I started to monitor the gauges on the edge, EGT, Tran Temp, Boost, ECT, EOT.

My ECT was reading a bit low, around 175 to 180. So being a new to me truck, I assumed bad thermostat. Went and got all the stuff to do a proper flush, distilled water, vc-9, and motorcraft gold coolant. Did the step by step flush with the thero removed. Old coolant looked clean, and was fairly clean after the vc-9 also. Flushed the snot out of it 6 times with distilled water.
New thermo installed and new coolant added to the lower line of the degas bottle, ran the truck up to temp a few times and have not had to add any water. The level does drop when the truck is up to temp, but goes back to the lower line when shut off.

ECT is only going up to 192 at the highest and then drops back down to 188 on the highway and 176 or so in town, still seems a bit low to me? The EOT will climb right in line with the ECT until about 188, then the EOT continues to rise, on my 15 or so mile drive to work the EOT only gets to about 196, but I took her on a longer 20 minute HWY ride yesterday and the EOT came up to 225, with the ECT staying about 188. After coasting or coming to a stop EOT drops right back down at idle.

I believe the truck has had the EGR delete done, due to the fact I pulled the EGR valve and it was extremely clean, not a speck of carbon, and I am throwing code P0401 insufficient EGR flow.

Now finally to the questions,
1. Do you think I got a bad thermo? ECT temps seem a bit low?

2. Oil cooler going bad/plugged? When someone does the EGR delete don’t they normally change the oil cooler? And shouldn’t it be good for awhile or do they re-plug go bad again?

3. Do I need to worry about EOT going up to 225+, where should I let her cool down? Just can’t afford to do the Oil cooler right now.

4. Is there another way to check to see if the EGR delete was done, other than the P401 code and clean EGR valve?

5. After the coolant flush and thermo change, shouldn’t the cooling system burp some air so I would have to add some distilled water? Could there be some air in the system not allowing it to cool properly.

Sorry for the long post and ton of questions, but things just don’t seem right, truck runs great fires right up, no issues other than the whole temp thing.

Hello i am no expert but eots seem high, 37 degree diff. As far as egr delete, has the egr cooler been removed you should be able to see? it could have been welded up that will be hard to tell then. My truck is apart in garage now, i am waiting on my oil cooler to come. But my eot got to 232 and was not going to risk it any longer. I would watch the oil temps.

What was the ambient air temperature while doing your test? That could affect your coolant temps some although I don't think they're out of line at all. The EOT on the other hand ....get ready for an oil cooler. If your oil temp isn't going over 225 you'll be fine for normal driving although I don't like to see it get that high. The oil will certainly tolerate it. I would bet you a cold beverage that if you hooked up to tow something it would skyrocket. You don't have to worry about catastrophic damage until the oil temp gets well over 300* (350 I think is where the filter standpipe melts) and you're far from that.

FMI--what were your oil temps before the flush???

Thanks guys. The outside temp was about 15 F on the 20 min drive yesterday. Today 18 F drove for about an hour at 70 mph. And the EOT never went above 227 with the ECT at 188. Then a 20 min drive in town the EOT went down and never went over 197. I was not monitoring the EOT prior to the flush.

I think that people are clogging there oil cooler when they do the vc9 flush. Also I did not replace my oil cooler when I did my egr cooler. I didn't know there was any problems with the oil coolers when I did mine. Oh I wish I would have, replaced the oil cooler a year later. My oil was getting to 250 pulling some heavy loads. Thanks to this site I found out about the oil cooler before everything went boom! I just welded my egr cooler shut, and I get the same code as you are getting. So I think some one has done it all ready. I also wounder if coolant temps are lower because there is no hot exhaust heating up the coolant. My coolant temps stay around 189 all the time. But I do think it's time for a new oil cooler. Because you don't have a egr cooler now you might be fine if you are very careful. imo

I WAS monitoring my temps before the vc9 flush - BUT, I had a
bad t-stat. So, unfortunately I don't know if the bad t-stat was
hiding the bad EOT vs. ECT or caused it
- and I hate that I can't tell which it was.

Just for comparison purposes, when I drove @ 75mph for > 15 minutes
my coolant temp stays @ 188-190 (I replaced my t-stat last month)
but my oil temp varies (probably a partial blockage):

(these are temps AFTER installing the new t-stat and AFTER vc9 flush)

outside temp OIL temp (read via ODBII)
30 190
65 205
80 207

The OIL temp cools right down if I take an exit ramp or have to
slow down due to traffic (aka tourists visiting Orlando)
If I drive around town in stop/go type traffic oil temp gets to 198
(which would be "normal" if it didn't get so hot @ hi-way speed)

I still have my EGR cooler, so I'm getting prepared for a bulletproof
oil and egr cooler "upgrade" in January.

In your case, not sure higher oil temps (up to a point) will effect things,
but I suspect you are in for a new oil cooler.

185-190* is normal for ECT ...mine only reaches close to 200* when towing. EOT runs 190-198*. My tranny temps are 145-150* when cruising easy...according to my ScanGauge2. All results with ambient temp in mid 40s. HTH
