fuel pressure

i checked my fuel pressure today..... turned key on and the gauge read 40 psi. i purged the air out of the hose at the gauge and it had the same reading. drove it to see if pressure would change but it droped down to about 38 psi
pulled in to the drive way shut the engine off and turned key back on and got 60 psi ???? turned key off then back on and again only got 40 psi on gauge. what am i missing or doing wrong? I'm confused and concerned

Have you checked it with a mechanical gauge ? The sensor may be bad for the gauge you are using.

I guess it is possible that the regulator spring is stuck or something similar is going on. I don't know how likely that is though.

Gotcha' -- understand now.

To OP: did you install the whole kit? There's the replacement brass poppet valve and gasket. Also IIRC there was a thread where one of our members mentioned different fuel pressure regulators and if you didn't catch putting a certain o-ring in the FP would be off.

I'll see if I can find that thread and bring it back...

Here's the thread -- not a lot of detail on telling the different type FPRs. So we might could use some help from Mark (bismic), who's knowledge of all things 6.0. runs deep...

One housing uses this sleeve, the other (like the one in the picture) doesn't.

Thanks Rusty -- any idea when they would have switched to the new style FPR? The OP has an '04 so maybe this is a possibility?

If your gauge is a mechanical one with respect to not using an electrical signal to read the pressure ( like a bourdon tube style ) I would be concerned also, if however it converts an electrical signal from a pressure sensor I would suspect the sensor.
