i have a 94 e150 cargo van with the 4.9. i bought it a few years ago with it hiccupping and clicking or tapping when i take off or going up hill. i checked the plugs and wires they are still good along with the cap and rotor. could this be a blown cyl? if so what will happen if i keep driving it with a blown cylinder? i made a one hour trip driving it like this. im thinking of making a 2hr trip but im thinking of thats kinda pushing it. but my question is what will happen if it will finally give out. i have 265k miles. thanks
if its just a clicking/tapping, that could be the timing is just a little too far advanced, causing a ping or "spark knock" as its sometimes called.
it could also be that your lifters are sticking and no longer taking out the slack in the valve train
but the hickuping part suggests it might be missing on a cylinder or two, possibly crossed plug wires, possibly something else.
it would be helpful to do a compression test or leakdown test to verify the health of the engine itself
thanks for the replie im gonna take it in sometime next week to have it looked at again. i took it to 2 mechanics so far one says they couldnt figure it out but told me the engine still sounds very strong and that it could be an injector or cyl. the other one is when i took it in to have the fan clutch replaced and to ask them to find out why its running like this and they told me they didnt have time to see what it was lol i was like ok.
Have you checked for an exhaust leak at the manifold and head?
IF you have such a leak, it will erode the head and/or manifold making a repair difficult and expensive.
Also, if you have "mechanics" who can't figure it out or who can't be bothered to diagnose this, you should find another shop. This is a very common problem on engines of all types, and fairly easy to run down, at least to the specific cylinder.
ya im taking it in to this one mechanic that rebuilt the engine on my sisters 4runner. i got a sound clip if anyone wants to hear it email me at fearkobe05@aol.com in subject put e150. thanks
