Friend wants to drop in a 428 into his 360/390 truck. Don't know if its a real 390 yet. But anyway,
1) will a 428 drop in and bolt up to the same motor mounts?
2) will the auto c6 bolt to the 428 or will he need a different c6?
3) whats the easiest way to spot a 428 in a junk yard without taking it apart? (no vins left on the doors -.- _
I believe that its a yes and a yes(with caveat of there is a motor mount and tranny mount bolt differences on early vs late FE motors) As far as finding one at the JY by sight alone... Look for an FE with an external balancer and you will get from 352,360,390 to 409, 428,, or a cobbled together variant of the same. Also the FT motors look right, but their give away is the centered front motor mount
I don't think the 428 was ever available in a truck. I think the only FE that was in the 73-79 trucks was a 360 from the factory. And, the valve cover bolts are the same for every FE. They all used the same block just some had different stamps than the next. Also, on the back of the crank there are different designs cut into where the flywheel/flexplate sits. some have a half moon some have a square some just have a flat spot and some have a mixture between the 3. I wish my post was a little more helpful but this is all I know.
I don't think they did. I'm pretty sure they were only in cars. They were mainly only put in the Galaxies and Thunderbirds and they were only put in a few Mustangs and some others. This is why the 428 Mustangs sell for so much.
Yea, you can get a 4.250 crank from coast high for 700 bucks and then you would have a 438. Then you wouldn't have the thinner walls like the 428 vs the 390. You could carry the 4.050 bore and a 4.250 stroke.
