My new front calipers will be here tomorrow and they r going on sat. Well I'm going through a divorce and all my extra fluid is at the house that I don't have access to now and I can't remember what kind it is. What is recommended for my 2000 Ex 4wd v10?
The OEM Motorcraft DOT3 is actually pretty good, and was, a little surprisingly, less costly at my local dealership than through Amazon. It's pretty cheap.
Any DOT 3 or 4 will work and be 100% compatible with what it in there. If you tow or tend to need heavy braking then a higher quality fluid may be needed. I used to run ATE Super Blue in my race car and now run that in everything. High boiling point and just a good quality fluid. They also make an amber version in case you want a standard looking fluid.
OEM Motorcraft DOT 3 High Performance brake fluid has a minimum dry boiling point of 500 degrees F, which is close to that of other race fluids like ATE Super Blue.
The OEM Motorcraft DOT 3 does have a wet boiling point that's about 100 degrees F worse than race brake fluid though, and all brake fluid is hygroscopic (readily takes up & retains moisture), so doing a brake fluid flush every couple of years is important to retain brake fluid performance closer to the dry boiling point.
As stated, Ford's DOT 3 is a better product then most of the DOT 3s you can buy retail. DOT 4 does have a higher boiling point, but it is more hygroscopic then DOT 3 so unless you change out the fluid every 2-3 years, it won't matter.
