Keep the 390 AS IS.

Sell the explorer stuff and part it out since you have time. The Explorer forums are just like here and it's easier to part a vehicle out on a forum anyways. Once you have the cash, buy a 302, put it in the ranger and have 2 trucks, one with better gas milage. You can tune the 302 to get good enough gas milage to make you happy.

If I had all the time and was in this situation, this ^^ is what I'd do because it'd make me happier in the end building another truck (with my skill set) vs. getting into a project only to (possibly/maybe not) fail and have to much torn up only to get ticked off and send it all to the scrap yard in the end. Just sayin' if you really know what your doing and want to tackle a huge project like this, then Kudo's to you and I can't wait to see the progress. I really like happy ending to projects, not the scrap heap.

I've got a few 302s laying around, thought about dropping it in my F100, Ranger is my work truck.

I'd rather just fix my Comet. Might keep the F100 as is. Now the project is interesting though.

About as close as one could get then.

And how about the LQ4 or LQ9 - you saying those aren't an LS either? You going stickly aluminum block or/truly designated LS family or what?

And if/when I do my LQ4 or LQ9 you'll be I'll still show my face around here. I'll even rub it in a little bit!

LQs? (Lesson Time - They're the iron-blocked versions aluminum LS engines installed in newer Sierras, Tahoes, 'burbans, and Escalades) LQs are part of the LS engine family.. iron block instead of aluminum. They're all the rage right now and Holley even holds an "LS Fest" where everything has to be powered by and LS (LQs included). CarCraft has been on an LS binge ever since they became popular to swap so I'm just waiting for that engine.

I'm all for it so bring it on. That's what custom fab and hot rodding is all about. I wanna build a tube buggy like Yannick Sire's called The Priapism (Google it!):

I'm a dummy when it comes to motors, but is the LT1 not an early, iron block version in the LS family? I thought it was the iron blocked 5.3 that was around when the LS1 was out.

Now they're up to the LS7 or so - right? And yes, I did know the LQ's are the 6.0, iron block LS family, and of course, yes - they are all the rage. For good reason though!

The LT1 is pretty much a glorified SBC although very different in terms of design. The LS/LQ is entirely different architecture... pretty much like comparing a Windsor to a modular.

Yep... LS9 now in the Corvette. LS/LQs also come in 4.8, 5.3, 6.0, 6.2. and 7.0. Based on what I have read, they're really easy to build to stupid horsepower levels.

Haha luckily for the Blue Oval die hards out there I have no intention of putting that in my Ford. It is actually destined to replace the 5.3 in my Silverado. Besides, putting that in my F250 defeats the purpose of why I bought the truck which was to have a very simple, very strong rough and tumble vehicle with minimal electronics and complexity I could take outdoors and to keep my son safe as a new driver.

Gen 1 and Gen 3 LS engines are the good ones of the SBC family, personally I think the LT1's suck, with the reverse coolant flow system and sticking the distributor up under the water pump it was a good idea at the time but Chevy hit the nail on the head with the LS engines. Ironically, LS heads are a lot easier to swap onto a SBF then it is to swap on to a SBC. There was a guy about a year ago custom fabbing LS heads onto a 408 I believe. I don't know if it ever got finshed or if he's still working on it. It's on SpeedTalk.

But talking about swapping Chevy's into our dents, well... I've got an 850 hp 540 BBC and a Rossler Powerglide in my super pro Camaro... I've also got a 400 hp Big Shot Nitrous plate system on the shelf too... Hmmm maybe I should drop them in my old girl?
